You guys won’t even believe it. The Holy Spirit pointed out ANOTHER new “thing” from David & Goliath this morning. It’s craziness, right?! The kind of craziness I love!

Verse 3 says, “The Philistines stood on the mountain on one side while Israel stood on the mountain on the other side, with the valley between them.” I stopped to ponder just what this looked like. Stop with me & try to visualize it: you’re on the mountaintop staring down the mountain, into the valley, then up the neighboring mountain were the Philistines are taunting you and your God.

Normally, when someone is “on the mountaintop” it’s a good place to be. For the Israelites, however, this was not a good mountaintop experience, as they were in a standoff with the Philistine army. They were in a daunting position. Can you go there with me? Have you even been in a situation like this? I know I have. Just when you think all your problems are behind you…you’re on the mountaintop, after all….you end up staring at a looming valley.

Then, verse 4 says, “Then a champion came out from the armies of the Philistines named Goliath…” and he says, “Choose a man for yourselves and let him come down to me. If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will become your servants; but if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall become our servants and serve us.”

Do you see that word, “champion”? The Hebrew meaning for this word found here is, literally “the man of the space between”, or “man between two”, meaning, “a person who, on the part of his own people, undertook to determine the national quarrel by engaging in single combat with a chosen warrior in the hostile army.” (Biblestudytools.com)

So we have two champions, Goliath & David, men between two sides, battling it out for their side, winner takes all. The Philistines chose their champion to fight, the Israelites chose their champion to fight.

Do you see the foreshadowing here?
Do you know of another champion?
A man between two sides?
One that battled for you?

How about Satan and Jesus? The battle for you, for good and evil, for life and death.

To the world’s eyes, Goliath seemed to have the upper hand. To the world’s eyes, Satan seemed to have the upper hand when Jesus died.

All David had was a sling-shot. All Jesus had was a cross.

BUT factor in our all-powerful mighty God and look again!
David ALSO had the faith to move mountains; he was able to harness the ultimate power of God, and was victorious in his battle against Goliath!
Jesus ALSO had the ultimate power, being God in the flesh, and was victorious in His battle against death, against evil!

Jesus is the ultimate champion, the ultimate “man between two”. He was God, who became man, to be our champion, to fight for us, and my friends, He was victorious, He arose from the dead. The battle has already been fought and won. All you have to do is choose your champion. For me, my champion is Jesus. How about you?
